15 Westminster at Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI Harry Grodsky & Co., Inc. has completed many projects with RISD using both Design Build and traditional Plan & Spec delivery methods. On this Historic Preservation project, we performed as a Design Build contractor. The project included the construction of a new chiller plant and high-efficiency boiler plant, new cafeteria and servery, and renovations to library, archives, and office spaces. Complex coordination of trades and an overall lack of as-builts for the existing systems were challenges which resulted in many intensive hours of investigation and detailing by our design team. The greatest challenge was installing a modern, energy-efficient system without any major modifications to the building. The project team was recognized with an award from the Preservation Society for integrating functional and modern elements that compliment the character of the original architecture and design. The relationship between old and new in this space is harmoniums and an excellent example of adaptive reuse of a historic space.
