Yale University Silliman College, New Haven, CT
This five-story, 250,000 sf dormitory and college encompasses one square city block. It opened in September 1940 as the last (and largest) of the original ten residential colleges at Yale, and includes buildings that were constructed as early as 1901.

Harry Grodsky & Co., Inc. was part of a team that performed a complete renovation of the building. The biggest challenge, by far, was retrofitting air conditioning into an old building which had never had it before. With access through a hole in the foundation, the basement was turned into multiple mechanical rooms to house equipment and piping. Duct was then routed through both new and existing shafts to feed the upper floors.

Due to the extremely tight quarters, the coordination of the project was done using 3-D CAD and a cumulative clash detection approach that all trades participated in, with Harry Grodsky & Co., Inc. as the gatekeeper.
