Nantucket Whaling Museum, Nantucket, MA
Harry Grodsky & Co., Inc. was part of a team selected for the task of updating and increasing the size of the Nantucket Whaling Museum. The project consisted of the complete gut and renovation of two existing buildings: the candle factory building originally built in 1847, and the Peter Foulger Museum building built in 1971, along with the addition of a new steel frame connector building.
One major challenge of the project was humidity control, due to the thick, humid island air and the nature of the special exhibits on display and the collections housed at the museum. Sophisticated controls, as well as the ability for off-island monitoring and control, helped to solve this problem. Another unusual challenge was the logistics of getting materials, equipment, and labor to the island. The effective effort, planning, and teamwork displayed by the contractors, engineers, architect, and owner resulted in a successful project for all and a successful Grand Opening for the museum, on-time and under budget. |
